why keeping promises is important.

David made a promise to Sushma whom he had met a couple times and fancied. He would ring her as soon as he got in from work that day, he said. She waited eagerly for his call because they were just getting to know each other and she was keen to have contact. But just before he was due to ring her, he got another call and was totally distracted by it. Sushma lost out because he forgot. He texted to apologise and suggested another call for the next day. However, he was busy calling so many other friends he forgot her again. He also reckoned on the 'Treat 'em mean and keep 'em keen' approach. Only Sushma didn't know that!

This time she sent a text to remind him that he hadn't called twice. He said he forgot, apologised again but complained of feeling 'hassled' and made a third promise which he did not keep either because he went out. That last broken promise did it for Sushma. She assumed he was not worth it and stopped waiting. He also didn't call again because he felt guilty.

The Value of Promises Very few people realise, or wish to accept, that one of the worst experiences in life to an individual is a broken promise. We all have moments when we make a promise to someone and cannot keep it, for a variety of reasons. That is understandable. However, when there is a definite pattern in breaking promises it suggests three things:
1. That the person to whom the promise is made is not really a priority in the scheme of things; not as valued as others.
2. That the person making the promise is trying to please too many people at once, perhaps to impress, but failing miserably.
3. That the promise itself is not perceived as important enough to be kept.

Promises mean a lot to people because they suggest appreciation, value and empathy and carry some pleasure in fulfillment.
The effect of broken promises is resentment, undue anxiety, missed opportunities and a lack of trust in future promises for one party, and a chain of guilt and feelings of incapacity and inadequacy for the other. Furthermore, a promise prevents alternative action being taken which means everyone loses out all round.

Broken promises also give a feeling of false competence, they keep the person stuck in a mode of regret and are rarely associated with success. The most successful people tend to value others and keep their word because it demonstrates integrity - a key attribute for achievement. Finally, if not handled sensitively, broken promises can cause ill feeling, damage friendships and even lose business.

For example, if David did not promise to call Sushma on various occasions, she would not wait for him to do it then feel disappointed when he didn't call. Neither would David end up feeling 'hassled' by her. By promising to call, it gave Sushma the perception that she was liked by him, that there was the possibility of a friendship and something pleasurable to anticipate. More importantly, Sushma might have called David instead!

It means they would have both benefited from the contact, it would have lessened their anxieties, especially when David was under pressure. He would not have felt obliged in any way to get in touch when he couldn't, and he would have felt much better about himself, his capabilities and his outtling power. The first call would also have sorted out whether they wanted to talk again to any extent, which would have helped both parties to move on more briskly in one way or another.

Sometimes the habits we develop over a lifetime can be very limiting both in their effect on us and on others. Most people don't mind a broken promise odd occasions. We all do it at times through the pressure of living. But if it becomes a pattern then it becomes part of our personality and is a pointer to how we treat others for our own feeling of power. It really does not suggest enough respect for the person on the receiving end and would also be irritating to them to some measure.

Some Tips for Keeping Promises

First, if you find yourself prone to breaking promises, ask yourself why and try to limit your promises in any one day. It means you will only do it when you feel genuine, you will have more chance of carrying it out, especially if you are not committed to too many people, and it will be appreciated even more. If you have no intention of calling someone, or doing something for them, DON'T promise it. They won't be anxiously waiting and you won't have any guilt. It might boost your fragile ego and esteem to keep people dangling, but it only upsets everyone in the end.

Second, the best kind of friendship and approach is doing a job or favour when you FEEL like it, and not if you feel obliged. Nothing should feel forced or pressured. Third, have a look at the three reasons above for not keeping your promises and try to remedy whichever one applies to you. If you are breaking your promises repeatedly to one person, chances are you are probably doing the same to others. It not only leaves some unhappy people in its wake but it merely destroys your credibility in the process. We are all very busy people but the main thing to bear in mind is that, with time being very limited, nothing is more important than our interaction with another human being.

Just think that if you promised a dear friend or relative to call them and you didn't do it, and then he/she died the next day, you would never forget that for the rest of your life! So ALWAYS try to keep a promise or don't make one at all.

Desire for Approval

It is our desire for approval why we make promises to too many people and then end up not keeping any, which then makes us feel worse and loses us our friends. It was Bill Cosby who said: "I do not know the secret of success, but the secret of failure is trying to please too many people all the time!"

If you value someone's friendship, or truly respect them, or you value your customers, don't make promises you can't keep because it could have an impact on them that even you are unable to foresee!

I dont know what promises are to you. To me, it is important to keep promises because i once made a promise but did not keep it and ended up hurting myself and others. I am not your mother, hence it is not my responsibility to advise you of what you should do and what you should not. Even your mother ain't expected to do that now, as you're already a young adult, not a child anymore. So just please think twice or thrice or even a thousand times before you make a promise. Don't make a promise just to satisfy someone, no matter how close that person is to you. I hope you will be honest with yourself and only make promises that are true to your feelings and will keep them for the longest time.

You should only friend someone if you really like the person and enjoy her/his company. If you don't, don't bother calling someone 'friend' because friends are way different from acquaintances. I am sure you don't just consider ___ as an acquaintance. Neither do you just see ___ as a normal friend. So why don't you admit that to others? Why must you lie to yourself? Is it because you're afraid that you're seen as 'uncool' if you hang out with someone like that? If that is the case, I pity ___ for placing her/his trust on the wrong person.

You once advised me to like a person for who/what/how she/he is. So why are you going against your words now?

Okay maybe I am being too harsh. Maybe you're still confused and need time to make up your mind. Whatever your decision is, I'll respect it because it does not directly affect my life. But it will have a huge impact on ___'s. So I'd like you to think carefully. Please do!

Oh no, actually you don't need to make a decision. So maybe it'd be very nice of you to just pay a little bit more attention to the way you're behaving. Please do not give her/him the wrong ideas and lead her/him on. You both are my friends. That's why I care.

incompetence.

i went back to school after dinner to lock the lifeguards locker since it was somehow not locked and i happened to have the key. i used that chance to steal the competition rope back to practise. i've been practising my rope throwing since 8 plus till a few minutes ago. then i decided to give myself a break since my arms were tired and my fingers were all rope-burnt! ;'(

i am getting more and more impatient with myself! despite practising for so long and trying so many different methods, i still couldnt even reach the 12m mark once. and the rope that i used was not even soaked with water, which means that it was lighter than it was supposed to be. i even tried coiling and throwing in a slower pace to see what was wrong but i still couldnt get it right. the rope just couldnt be fully released. arghhh why?

someone once asked me how important this competition was to me. i said it was very important but i couldnt give a reason why. actually there're many reasons, such as to participate in our first ever competition as a team, to foster the bonds in lifeguards, to have good memories to remember after we all graduate, to make acjc lifeguards known to other schools, to beat our personal best records, etc. but whats the ultimate reason behind all these? i think i need to find out what that is before going for competition.

okay i should get back to rope throwing now. i'll find my gloves so that my fingers wont be burnt anymore. i should get the coiling and throwing right before thursday as i still need to work on my pulling. it needs to be improved and so do my swimming, towing, diving underwater and plunging! arghh tmr i wont go for gp consultation anymore but instead go swimming to do some self training instead. nus invitational will be my first priority now! omg 11 days! will i have enough time?

11 days!

i went for training after one week slacking at home! we had training in nus swimming pool1! hixhix although today's training wasn't that tiring, i almost died! i got dq-ed halfway for my event! like after i swam 50m and did underwater for about 10m, i didnt have any more breath to continue! ;(( i guess that was because i didnt do the full event when i was having training at home, and i was quite shagged after the relay! that made me wonder how i'd survive on the competition day itself because the three events which i'd be taking part in would be consecutive, as in one after another! ohhh no i have to train more this week! i cannot get dq-ed, especially for the manikin relay!

after training, we had lunch in nus. haha it was so fun having lunch with lifeguards! we had new scandals! even coach jeremy had one (or two) now! and jiajun and rachel are getting engaged one week after competition! we're all invited to rachel's house for an engagement dinner! omg thats like so sweet! :D

11 DAYS TILL COMPETITION! my aim is not to get dq-ed and do my best for manikin relay and underwater and to hit about 14 seconds for rope throwing! go team! after nus invitational, we can go for national together too!

- dinner at home.
- packing.

i want to say some random things!
- bin's getting married at the end of this year! omg i cant believe it! :( the next time i go home she wont be there anymore! although i always fight with her, it'll surely be weird without her around. arghhh why must she get married? its still too early now [hmm, not really!]. plus i dont like that guy! haiz i hope i can attend their wedding!
- famine camp ended today. i wonder if someone survived!
- i think mozilla firefox is way cooler than the normal windows explorer! i shall use mozilla firefox from now on.
- i dont know how i'm gonna say good bye to jonny tmr! i'll miss him a lot! shit i should have listened to jun and not given jonny a name! oh no i named june june already! :(
- i keep blogging in point form these days!

okay shall ask bin to go for supper now! this might be the last time she can bring me out for supper already! i know this is selfish but i wish her boyfriend [soon to be husband] would go overseas or disappear somewhere and they would not be married and so she would continue staying with us! :(

home!

OMG MY HOLIDAY IS ENDING SOON! :( :( :(
****
i've been home for almost one week and what've i done? sleep, eat, swim, watch tv, go online, play games in my brother's laptop, go shopping, ... omg i am such a pig! haha i gained 1 kg in 5 days can you believe it? :@)
***
oh i actually brought my maths notes back but i didnt touch them at all! arghhh i cant study at home! i wonder why i still decided to bring back my notes although i knew for sure that they would be left untouched in my luggage! i guess its because i'd feel guilty if i didnt bring any notes home!
****
anyways i still love my holiday at home! i dont need to worry about anything! i can just laze around for the whole day! i can demand for anything i want! i can bully everyone and be pampered to death! life's great! haha i'll die when i come back to singapore! but well, i will be back in two days' time! oh no noone's placed any order to duck embryo eggs yet! :(
****
some promises for the coming week:
- STUDY STUDY STUDY everyday for at least 2 hours a day! (plan out a study calendar or something and follow that thing strictly!)
- steal a rope from lifeguards' locker (okay maybe i should ask rachel/jiajun first) and bring back to hostel and practise throwing everyday until competition.
- go for training for all 4 times next week and self-train in the following week to cut down on my individual event's timing as much as possible. i dont think my freestyle timing will improve much, so i shall work on my underwater-ing and towing!
- run! i havent ran ever since napfa! i bet i cant even run 2 rounds now!
- go online less often so that i have no time to STUDY and i wont go blind anytime soon.
- do not talk on the phone too much because the person i call might not feel comfortable and i might be a distraction/irritant/bother when the person is trying to do work and i cant do anything when i am talking on the phone either.
****
okay i think thats enough. i shouldnt set too many targets because i wont be able to meet all of them. going off now! shall update when i am back to hell.

happy birthday mrs looi!

we went to mrs looi's place today because it was her birthday yesterday!
haven't met her for ages! she hasn't changed a bit!
my ex-classmates and i stayed there and talked to her for hours!
it was really funny recalling how childish we were last time! :D :D :D
we kept laughing as we remembered how we always slept in her class!
omg time flies! i cant believe that we're actually taking A Levels soon!
she told us that this is the last lap, so we must sprint and cannot slack!
okay okay i shall start mugging like seriously from tomorrow onwards!
i cannot disappoint her since she's like the nicest teacher that i've ever had!
