tired.

i am tired, just so so so tired! ):

i feel as if i were just a lifeless body and i look terrible after a few weeks of suffering from a major flu and prolonged stay in hanoi's summer heat. and the clock which just refuses to stop ticking every second does nothing good to my mental health either - it only adds about nine kilograms of stress and maybe twenty-eight sleepless nights to my i-have-a-sad-life list!

i guess i finally understand why people miss school when they start working. i, too, feel a tinge of jealousy when seeing people's back-to-school posts which have been flooding my facebook newsfeed over the past few days. the feeling is already so horrible now, when my schedules are still very flexible. things will just get worse next year when i have a full-time job, wont they? ):

i need to find out whom i really want to be and what i really want to do with my life.
i need to find out whom i really want to be and what i really want to do with my life.
i need to find out whom i really want to be and what i really want to do with my life.

cravings!

suddenly craving for a starbucks caramel frappucino, and many many other things!!!

stressed.

today seems to be a bad day! ): after constantly getting disturbed in my sleep last night because of all the phone notifications, i still woke up early because of a bad dream in the morning. and i kind of remember keeping thinking about serious stuff in my sleep, such as coming up with the to-do list for this week, brainstorming ideas for cover letters and dreading the thought of having to wake up super early every morning to take an one-hour mrt ride with the rest of the crowd to the grinders' headquarters. haish, all these thoughts just suddenly made me so stressed, what am i gonna do now? ):

where we're gonna be when we turn 25...

Distinguished guests, faculty members, fellow graduates, ladies and gentlemen!

I am Nguyen Quynh Phuong from the Nanyang Business School and I am honoured to be presenting my graduation speech to you today. Yes, this is unlike the traditional medium how valedictories are usually delivered.  However, ‘valedictory’ is simply derived from a Latin word which means ‘to bid farewell’, so shouldn’t all of us be entitled to this privilege of formally saying goodbye to the institution where we have spent three or four valuable years of our youth?

It would have been really sweet if NTU had been a love at first sight for me, but the truth is that it wasn’t. Trust me, for someone who came from SCGS and ACJC, hearing your new college anthem completely in Mandarin at the Freshman Welcome Ceremony was not much different from having your ears blasted by a bomb explosion. Four years ago, NTU welcomed me with a cultural shock and I started a list named ‘love eveNTUally’ with all the good things about NTU for which I should be thankful. Throughout these four years, I’ve occasionally added new-found loves for NTU to make a complete list. And now, I can proudly say that I’ve made the right choice coming to NTU.

Personally, NTU is not only a school but also a home for me. It is the loveliest house one could ever ask for, with long (and seemingly never ending) flights of stairs, gorgeous green gardens and beautiful blue swimming pools. It is where I have made many good friends through sleepless nights camping in seminar rooms rushing to meet project deadlines or chilling in one of the balconies in the hall of residence talking and laughing our hearts out with one another. And it is also a place which has witnessed my personal growth through a wide range of life events and a broad spectrum of emotions experienced.

How many of us will travel to Pioneer MRT and take the Pioneer bus or drive all the way to Nanyang Avenue again after today? Indeed, I guess not many will return to this little island at the West-most end of Singapore in the near future. So look around you now, at this exact moment, to see all the familiar faces (some of which could be one of the motivations for you to attend classes everyday while some others might have served as your dart throwing targets), call out all the familiar names and give one another a friendly pat on the back, for you are now collectively known as the ‘Class of 2013’ together with all these people, whether you like them or not.

At the same time, this celebratory moment should also be dedicated to the people who have always been there to shower us with unconditional love and care and to support us at any stage along the way throughout this entire journey. For you, these people could be your parents, your family members, your teachers or your friends. For me, I don’t usually express my feelings out and am not very good with flowery and poetic words but I am certain that the people who have made a difference in my life throughout these four years know very well who they are and how deeply appreciative I am of their kindness. For everything you have done for me, thank you!

Our schooling may be over, but our education still continues and graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life. Today’s ceremony will officially open up the doors to a bigger, more challenging yet remarkably rewarding school for all of us and I wish that we would graduate exceptionally well from that school, just like how we did it in NTU!

To end this speech, I would like to share with you a famous quote by Mark Twain, “Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Thank you.

right back where we started from...

i am so sorry that i've disappeared for quite a while! after the last semester in ntu, life has been quite happening with moving out, travelling and more travelling. travelling was fun (it may sound like an exaggeration but for the first time in my life, i have the feeling that there's another hobby more therapeutic than shopping haha). there have been a lot of interesting travelling incidents too, like how i always seemed to be on final boarding calls and even missed a flight!

so anyways, i am now back to singapore again after a month and a half at home. to be honest, i was quite reluctant to go back at first, because i had been too used to the comfortable life at home. however, being back to singapore this time just feels so different from all the other times - i can slowly enjoy every moment without having to rush for anything and i can do all the things i've always wanted to do but couldn't afford to previously, like taking long bus rides to different parts of the city just to see how things have changed over the years.

so i guess singapore isn't a bad place - it is actually a beautiful city with hidden treasures if you have the time to discover them! (:

give and take.

if you know me well, you'll totally be able to tell how much of a calculative person i am. although it's not to the extreme extent displayed by sheldon in the big bang theory (if you even watch), i often don't feel comfortable taking stuff from others without anything in return or giving others stuff for free (especially when i feel that they don't deserve it).

unfortunately, life is not always fair, so i'll have no choice but to suck it in when some people just take but refuse to give. however, when my kindness is taken for granted again and again and you keep taking/abusing my stuff without my permission with no intention of reciprocating, i dont think i can remain cool any longer.

option pricing models.

my self-confidence is often on the high end, sometimes to the extent that others and i can both agree that i'm too full of myself. but this is hardly the case when i have to deal with option pricing models - they are so evil that they have the dark power to make me lose faith in myself almost entirely.

3 years into my business specialisation, i should be quite familiar with option pricing models because they pop up every now and then. there were certain points of time when i thought i understood them (like last year, when i had no choice but to do well for my binomial option pricing quiz to make up for the 1.5/20 score obtained for the first derivative quiz), but those moments of accomplishment didn't last long. because of this, i'm now as lost and confused about option pricing models as if it were my first encounter with them.

i believe that now is probably the time when i understand banking and finance the most in my entire life, since i've spent the entire revision week on nothing but banking and finance. sadly, being at this peak doesn't necessarily equate to understanding option pricing models.
