nanyang mart.

do you remember going grocery shopping in nanyang mart after a meal at canteen 2 not so long ago? well, you can't do it anymore now because nanyang mart has been closed forever and replaced with shop n save.

before shop n save was opened, half of the place where nanyang mart used to be was undergoing renovations while the other half was magically transformed into 7-11 within like a day. how did people react then? people complained. facebook groups such as 'Boycott Can 2 7-11" were formed and spread around at the speed of light.

quickly enough, the renovations for the first half of the place where nanyang mart used to be were completed and shop n save could be easily seen from afar. and immediately after shop n save started business, 7-11 ceased its operations. but did anyone say anything about shop n save? was any other facebook group formed? i think not.

i don't know how to explain human behaviours in this case, but just think that it is an interesting phenomenon.

job!

this is a photo taken from a post from 2009 in this blog (yes, back to the era where photos were taken from nokia phone with no instagram or whatsoever).

it's an old photo from the time when i was young. i have been thinking abt plans after graduation and asking myself questions about what i'd like to do or or where i'd like to be while deciding which jobs or companies to apply to. hardly was i able to answer these questions. so i just ended up submitting 2 applications (while others simply mass-emailed their resumes to 10,000 companies) to the companies which i'd worked at previously because i am someone who prefers familiarity instead of changes.

being a soon-to-be graduate holding a double degree in business (banking and finance) and accountancy, it would be most reasonable for me to apply to an accounting firm or a bank. however, i didn't submit any application to banks, not because i was lazy, but because i knew for sure that those weren't where i belong and i would never be happy at such places. yes you would have a lot of money and prestige if you were to work for like a big investment bank, but so what?

anyways so what's the link between all these ramblings and the photo? yeah this photo was taken when i was on the way to shangri-la for an early morning shift at the loyalty centre. people don't usually associate orchard with serenity because we aren't often there at 7 o'clock in the morning but i did, at that time, because i was often there at such an early hour. despite having to wake up early, working random shifts and doing tiring (and sometimes repetitive) tasks for months, i was still very happy and satisfied with my job and the little amount i earned then.

of course, i wasn't such a philosopher back then, so neither did i try to explain the sources of my happiness nor were i thrilled with the fact that i was always so full of life. hmm, not that i am a philosopher now, but i guess i am slightly more matured and starting to appreciate these random facts of life (though the process is a bit delayed). so what do i want for a job? i just want to do something that makes me happy.

unconditional love.

i love my grandfather more than anyone in this world and it is the kind of unconditional love which doesnt need to be said to be felt. hence, i always remember his birthday and know what to do not just on his birthday but on every other day as well. so please don't include me in your irrational 'race' and spoil my mood for the whole day, thank you very much!

back to the past.

i went to jp for dinner with my brother on sunday because i suddenly had a weird craving for don-and-don at ichiban sushi. not wanting to go home immediately after dinner, i persuaded my brother to walk around in jp with me for a while first and that was the first time i shopped in the basement of jp since the last time i did (which probably took place 10000 years ago). and guess what? i felt so carefree like a child all again! :D

and when i was watching my lecture recordings for astronomy today, i learnt that we are essentially looking back in time when we stare at distant stars on the sky. can my adventure at jp be considered a trip to the past too? (:

the universe.

having listened to 10 astronomy lecture recordings continuously over the past few days, i can't help being amazed by how wonderful the universe is and how small we actually are.

and i am just thankful for being alive and able to appreciate the beauty of nature.

cám ơn cuộc đời mang em đến như một giấc mơ!

one of the original sound tracks from 'cầu vồng tình yêu' in my shuffle playlist was played when i was on the way home from school and it just reminded me so much of the days when i was, hmm, young! (: i miss the excitement from waiting for the show every thursday and friday, or the sleeplessness from wondering when the next youtube video would be uploaded. those were the days...

i wish i were taller!

one of the rare (maybe not) occasions when i can't convince myself that petite girls are cuter or that our height is actually measured from our forehead to the sky and instead wish i were slightly taller is when i go shopping and the shopping bags are so big that i can't straighten my arms when carrying them! ):
