soup (or canh) is one of the 'compulsory' dishes in a vietnamese meal. there are different types of soup - some just made from boiled vegetables and some lime, some just consisting of meat and tomatoes or some requiring about 1001different ingredients.
it is not the same in other parts of the world. in singapore, for example, a meal can be totally complete without having a soup. in most food courts, soup is merely a mixture of water, some leaves and a lot of MSG. hence, one can only ask for good soup in a good restaurant where a 5-and-above-course meal is served. (well, some exaggerations here, but you get the point!)
there was a sudden realisation that came to my mind yesterday - mushroom soup is the best soup ever, and no matter how many other kinds of soup you have tried and are going to try, nothing is ever comparable.
